The keen-sighted amongst you may have noticed a few changes. It’s true that we’ve had a bit of a refresh, including an updated logo, a change of colours and, of course a new website. But that’s just cosmetic. For the really interesting stuff, you have to look a little deeper.
As we welcomed in 2021 and with it another national lockdown, we started to think – Why? Anyone who has been around Atlas knows it is a special business. Whether you’re in one of our 22 regional support offices, or are out on the ‘frontline’ supporting our 2,200 clients, there’s a warmth and a camaraderie that makes it feel different to other companies. When you speak to those who have been in the business the longest, you realise it’s always been there. But what is ‘it’? We decided it was time to find out.
At this point, a lot of other companies would bring in an agency or a slick consultant. But that didn’t feel right for us, so we did what we always do when we need wisdom and expertise – we asked our colleagues.
The response was remarkable.
We were honestly not sure what would come back when we initially asked the team, but when it did, it made perfect sense:
Creating happiness in ourselves and others. We approach work and life with a sense of fun, optimism and belief, and strive to have a positive impact on the world around us. We show kindness and compassion to all those we meet, ensuring everyone is safe and healthy. We deliver on our promises and go the extra mile every day.
We also wanted to take the opportunity to codify the behaviours that make us who are we are when we’re at our very best. This is what our colleagues came up with.
We are family. Just like any other family, we laugh, cry, celebrate and commiserate together. We may come from many different backgrounds, but we’re always there when it really matters. Whether it’s with practical help and support, or simply a mug of tea and a shoulder to cry on.
Sharing makes us stronger. Knowledge is more powerful when it’s shared. Which is why we share everything – our ideas, our expertise, our news and most of all, our time. Show humility. Be patient. Share and work together, and anything is possible.
Own your space. You are Atlas. Take responsibility and don’t be afraid to make decisions. Use your time wisely and treat every pound as if it was coming from your own pocket.
Be honest. Always. Have the courage to do the right thing, even when no-one is watching. Whether it’s owning up to a mistake, having a difficult conversation, or simply arguing a point you feel passionate about. Be yourself. Authenticity breeds trust. Trust brings happiness.
Treat clients like our best friends. Friends who you can be completely open and honest with, because they trust you to put their interests first. We take the time to listen to what’s going on in our clients lives and pull out all the stops to make them feel happy.
Start with Wow. And never settle for less. Create time to focus on quality and prioritise long-term solutions over short-term fixes. Constantly seek opportunities to learn from others and, if something doesn’t make sense, shout. Always ask yourself if there is more we can do to create happiness in those around us.
Don’t just talk. Do. We are a business that thrives on doing. The more we do, the more we succeed. Embrace change. Keep it simple. Keep meetings short. Plan just enough to succeed. And then get on with it.
Over the last few weeks, we have been presenting our purpose and values back to the people who created it, our brilliant team. As we have, we’ve heard countless stories of colleagues living these values – from the cleaner who drove across London in her own car to pick up clean towels, so a gym could open to its customers; to a member of our support team doing the weekly shop for an ill team mate. And that’s what is truly exciting, our purpose and values are not something we’ve written to simply put on the wall or refer to in sales packs – they are who we are.
